The Kolkata East-West Metro Project in India, which Yachiyo Engineering Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Taito-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Tsutomu Takahashi), as consortium member of General Consultant (GC), has supported since 2009, has been completed and opened in full on August 22, 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the opening ceremony and inaugurated the corridor, which was held in a grand manner.

In this project, our company, as a member of the general consultant consortium, provided project management and design supervision for the Kolkata East-West Metro under the ODA (Official Development Assistance) grant aid scheme. Elevated section from Salt Lake Sector-V ~ Salt Lake Stadium, opened in February 2020, Salt Lake Stadium ~ Phoolbagan section opened in October 2020, the Phoolbagan ~ Sealdah section opened in July 2022, and the Howrah Maidan ~ Esplanade section opened in March 2024. With the opening of the Esplanade ~ Sealdah section, the entire line is now operational. The Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section opened in March 2024 was the most challenging section of this project. To run the tracks beneath the sacred and large Indian river, the Hooghly (river width approx. 520m), the shield tunnelling method (TBM method) has been employed for the entire underground portion including tunnel below riverbed.
